Big Jan Wears Pink Boots 2024
Pink Boots Society Collaboration Brew
Big Jan is back again and better than ever! We’re celebrating International Women’s Day, with our sixth annual Pink Boots Society Collaboration beer: Big Jan Wears Pink Boots Hazy IPA!
More than 20 ladies from various departments came together for a creative session to workshop this year’s label design. We asked the team to create a number of illustrations based on prompts like “what it means to be a woman in beer”, “meaning of belonging”, and “inspirational women in your life” to name just a few. To say we had an absolute blast drawing and hanging out with a group of smart, creative women, is an understatement. We may need to include drawing time in all our workdays now!
Sharing and reflecting on each team member’s creative expression of these ideas, and then seeing those images integrated into the new label design was a true highlight of this year’s collaboration. We celebrate the 2024 IWD campaign theme ‘Inspire Inclusion’, and hope that the small steps we take to elevate the strong woman on our teams will inspire other women in predominantly male industries to seek and find their own sense of belonging.
Our ‘women in beer’ brew crew are proud to present a new Hazy IPA featuring the 2023 Pink Boots Hop Blend – which boasts bright notes of citrus and ripe, tropical fruit. All proceeds from this brew benefit The Pink Boots Society, supporting women in beverage alcohol and fermentation industries. Big Jan Wears Pink Boots Hazy IPA is now available online and at our brewpub. Grab yours today and let’s all raise this fancy new brew in a ‘Cheers’ to the women at Stanley Park Brewing, and the many others who inspire, include and elevate us every day!
Cheers to the Big Jan in your life!

We Brewed The World’s Best Light Lager!
We’ve got some pretty epic news to spill…
We just walked away from the 2023 World Beer Awards with a haul of awards that are making us prouder than ever – including Canada’s Best American Style IPA and THE WORLD’S BEST Light Lager! We stand humbled, yet elated to share the remarkable news of our brewery’s outstanding performance at the 2023 World Beer Awards. This recognition is a tribute to our unwavering commitment to the art of brewing, an endeavor where dedication, creativity, and precision converge. Let’s get into the details of our triumph and the brews that earned us accolades on the global stage.
Golden Glory: Electro Lager
Who needs one gold medal when you can nab two? That’s right, our Electro Lager snagged both the World Gold and Canada Gold medals for the World’s Best Light Lager. This crisp brew has a 4% ABV and a laid-back 15 IBU proves that sometimes, simple is extraordinary. It’s a clean tasting, flavourful light lager, late-hopped to add notes of citrus. Brewed with barley, oats, and a smidge of sea salt to produce a light to medium-bodied beer at only 90 calories and 3g carbs per 355ml can!

Canada’s Best IPA:Crushing It with Trail Hopper
IPA lovers, listen up! Our Trail Hopper IPA brought home the Canada Gold medal for best American Style IPA, and oh my, are we thrilled! Clocking in at 6.8% ABV and packing a punchy 65 IBU, this American Style IPA is a hoppy delight that doesn’t mess around. Think citrusy explosions mixed with just the right amount of earthy pine hop character – it’s basically an adventure in a glass.

Silver Linings:Our Stellar Line-up
But wait, there’s more! We might’ve notched up some silver medals, but trust us, they shine just as bright. The Captain Hazy IPA (6.2% ABV, 50 IBU) brings those hazy vibes to the table, while Windstorm West Coast Pale Ale (5.4% ABV, 35 IBU) will take you on an unfiltered citrus-hop journey inspired by our stunning surroundings. And let’s not forget our Meteor Sour (4.5% ABV, 7 IBU) – we’re exceptionally proud of our newest core beer getting recognized by the World Beer Awards. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s like a meteor shower of fruity goodness in your mouth!

Tipping Our Hat to Tradition:1897 Amber Ale
Bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, our traditional pub-style 1897 Amber Ale snagged the Canada Bronze medal. At 5.1% ABV and with a gentle 15 IBU, it’s a tip of the hat to our history and a nod to the future. It’s like enjoying a bit of liquid time travel, with hints of caramel maltiness and just the right touch of hops.

Wrapping Up the Epic Journey
As we reflect upon our remarkable journey through the 2023 World Beer Awards, we are reminded that awards are not merely tokens of recognition, but embodiments of our enduring commitment to the art of brewing. It’s not just about the medals (though they sure do look nice hanging out in our brewery), it’s about the heart and soul we pour into every brew. We’re humbled to be a part of the global beer community, and we’re not stopping here. Our passion for crafting top-notch beers that leave you grinning with each sip is stronger than ever.
From our tanks to your glasses, here’s to you, our amazing beer family. Cheers to raising the bar, pushing boundaries, and creating flavours that make memories to share with friends. Stay tuned for more because the best is yet to come – and it’s coming straight from the heart of Stanley Park.
Asian Heritage Month
Asian Heritage Month Beer Release: Kinship Rice Lager
New Beer Release: Kinship Rice Lager
Asian Heritage Month
May is Asian Heritage Month and we’re celebrating diversity, cultural connection and belonging within our community. In collaboration with our internal PAC-Asia employee resource group, and the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, we’re excited to launch our Kinship Rice Lager. A beer celebrating the coexistence of cultures and embracing the diversity that makes Canada unique.
Tasting Notes
This year, we’ve brewed a unique Rice Lager, flavoured with Mangosteen, a speciality Southeast Asian fruit offering a juicy aroma, as well as ube (ou-bae), a sweet purple yam often used in desserts in the Philippines, lends hints of vanilla-nut to the taste of this light pink coloured brew.
Community & Partnership
Stanley Park Brewing has partnered with the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, a registered charity founded in 2011, that honours a culture and community established in Vancouver more than 100 years ago. The organization is characterized by a spirit of entrepreneurship, innovation and a passion to help the revitalization of Chinatown – one of Canada’s most iconic neighbourhoods and the historic heart of Vancouver.
This label was designed by local artist, Nicole Larsen from Ripple and Rise, created to bring communities together to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, their cultures and kinship. Read more about Nicole and the inspiration for this design below.
All proceeds from Stanley Park Brewing’s Kinship Wheat Ale are going towards the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, supporting their revitalization efforts.
ABOUT THE ARTIST & LABEL DESIGN ISNPIRATION
Nicole
My name is Nicole (she/her) and I’m a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, muralist, and the creative behind Ripple & Rise. My art is inspired by nature, connection, and everyday moments in life, and is known for its bold, bright colours and joyful, uplifting energy.
When designing the label for this special beer, I was inspired by the natural beauty and cultural diversity of Asia, as well as the flavour of the beer itself. I chose four flowers native to Asia which hold many significant symbolic and spiritual meanings (Sakura, Hibiscus, Jasmine and Lotus), as well as the mangosteen fruit to showcase the flavour of the beer.
Being a part of a project that values Asian representation and works to uplift Vancouver’s Chinatown community has been such an honour. It has allowed me the opportunity to create something that celebrates my own Japanese heritage and the diverse Asian community in Vancouver, while staying true to myself and my artistic style. I feel so grateful to be a part of such a meaningful project!

Big Jan Wears Pink Boots
BIG JAN IS BACK!
The ladies of Stanley Park Brewing got together for a Women’s Brew day to participate in our 4th annual International Women’s Day Pink Boots Society Collaboration Brew. We caught up with Brewer, Rachel Young, as she tells us more about the inspiration for this beer, her mom – Big Jan, and what this collaboration series means to her.
This years brew is a Hazy IPA to showcasing the 2021 Pink Boots hop blend, featuring notes of citrus, tropical fruit, and a hint of pine. All proceeds go to the Pink Boots Society, to help support women in brewing. The Pink Boots Society was created to assist, inspire, and encourage women and/or non-binary individuals in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry to advance their careers through education.
Stanley Park Brewing has been involved in four Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Days and are proud to have donated thousands of dollars to help in the education of future women in brewing! We recognize the importance in having an organization of females in the fermented/alcoholic beverage industry who is supporting all women who brew and ferment, package, design, serve and write about beer.

Stanley Park Brewing Conservation Corner: Invasive Species
How do invasive plant species impact Stanley Park?
Stanley Park fights a Hostile Takeover!
Invasive plants are species that are not native to a particular area, which have a negative impact on local plants and wildlife. If conditions suit these non-native plants, they spread rapidly, outcompeting native species and ultimately cause declines in biodiversity, leading to unhealthy ecosystems. Invasive species are often such a problem because they do not have the natural predators or limitations to keep their growth in check.
Invasive species are considered one of Canada’s greatest threats to the survival of our wild animal and plant life!
The variety of native plant species in an ecosystem decreases as invasive species grow aggressively, blocking native species’ access to resources such as soil, nutrients, sunlight, and water. The change in plant ecology, and loss of native plant biodiversity, affects wildlife by limiting their food availability and shelter.
Check out the display to see what this overall loss of biodiversity looks like in Stanley Park. Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) works to remove invasive plants and restore affected areas by encouraging re-growth of native berry-producing plants and planting native species.

Food For Thought
Native berry plants are adapted to co-exist with one another and create biodiverse areas as they grow. Invasive species, however, tend to take over and become the only plant species in an area.
In addition, many invasive species such as Himalayan Blackberry develop fruit which overlaps with native species. This means there is more competition amongst plants for their seeds to be dispersed by wildlife. This increased competition can reduce the success of native plants in being able to grow and spread within local habitats.Invasive plants also pose another problem in that they take up space, but don’t necessarily provide habitat for wildlife. The diversity of native plants in Stanley Park, however, provides a variety of shelter options for birds and other wildlife.Previous studies within Stanley Park have shown that invasive plant species reduce the presence of wildlife species within a given area. In a 2010 study conducted by SPES, a total of 281 individual birds were observed in a biodiverse stand of native plants, compared to only 48 individuals observed in an invasive blackberry stand.
Some bird species still do however nest in invasive plants. These species include American Robins and Spotted Towhees. To ensure no wildlife are negatively impact during restoration work conducted by SPES, certain invasive plant species (such as Himalayan Blackberry) are only removed outside of nesting season (March – August).
COMMON INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES WITHIN THE PARK
English ivy (Hedera helix) – English ivy is native to the UK. English ivy is a vine that grows in a dense mat on the ground, creating an “ivy desert” by smothering everything around it.Himalayan blackberry (Rubus armeniacus) – This tenacious berry originated in Asia. It grows in a thicket, with prickles along canes that reach 5 metres in height. Thickets can produce around 10,000 seeds per square meter. In addition to seeds, the plant can spread through root and stem fragments.
Cutleaf blackberry (Rubus laciniatus) – A cousin of Himalayan blackberry, this blackberry species is noted for its prominently spiked leaves and sweet berries. Originating from Eurasia, this species can grow up to 3 meters tall and similarly to Himalayan blackberry, grows in dense thickets which choke out other native species. Curious about the berries? See how they taste by trying SPB’s new Invasive Species Dark Lager!
Common Burdock (Arctium minus) – This plant originated in Europe. The dried flower heads have hooks that can attach to wildlife and were the inspiration for Velcro! The root is packed with vitamins and minerals, and has a sweet, earthy, nutty taste. Try it in SPB’s new Invasive Species Dark Lager!
Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) – This invasive species is responsible for causing disruptions in aquatic ecosystems, including reducing water flow in rivers canals, and is responsible for drastically reducing local plant biodiversity. Purple Loosestrife spreads rapidly.
Reed Canary Grass (Phalaris arundinacea) – Common in grassland and meadow habitats, this invasive is a notorious species for completely taking over
large areas, preventing native species from growing by choking them out with their dense root systems. Due to this, it is incredibly difficult to treat and remove!
